Melissa’s appreciation for nature began during the yearly family trip to her grandparent’s homes in Michoacán, Mexico. Having the opportunity to experience the mixture of natural woodland and agriculture those summer days made home feel like concrete city. A Fort Worth native, she has always been curious of the process behind adding green spaces that evoked the same feeling in urban settings.
At Texas A&M University, Melissa earned a bachelors degree in University Studies, with a double minor in Horticulture and Urban Planning. During this time, she had the opportunity to explore different facets of what design can be, and explored how humans and nature interacted. Participating in organizations, such as the National Hispanic Landscape Association, the National Association of Landscape Professionals, and the TAMU Tactical Urbanism research team, she learned the importance of minority representation, both professionally and in community involvement.
She later went to pursue a Master of Landscape Architecture degree at the University of Texas at Arlington. While at UTA, she received the Landscape Welfare Institute Excellence Award - Team, as well as served as Student ASLA President from 2019-2020. Her past learning experiences influenced her thesis research in phytoremediation. Her thesis, “Treatments of Contaminants from Hydraulic Fracturing…” explored the views of professionals towards the use of plants and phytoremediation methods to treat hydraulic fracturing spills in urban settings.
Prior to joining Design Jones, Melissa worked in high end residential design. She was able to study the design process and the importance of client involvement. She has a passion for natural restoration and minority representation which she is excited to explore at Design Jones. During her free time, you can find Melissa exploring the DFW area, home restoration projects with her father, and hanging out with her four legged friend Pepe.
